Nutrient Budgets and Systems Ecology

The SONE (Sediment Oxygen and Nutrient Exchange) project investigates the exchanges of dissolved materials between the water column and sediments in shallow estuarine systems.

This work developed improved budgets of nitrogen and phosphorus for Chesapeake Bay. Budgets from 13 consecutive years can be compared, including both flood and drought years and multi-year periods prior to and after major upgrades to sewage treatment plant operations.

This project analyzes factors such as persistent algal blooms, hypoxia and anoxia, and increased nutrient runoff, which affect water quality.

This project studies the relationship between loss of seagrass communities and eutrophication in coastal systems.
